Annual
A plant that completes its entire lifecycle — germination, growth, flowering, seed production, and death — within a single growing season. You need to replant annuals each year. Common examples include marigolds, zinnias, and basil.
Perennial
A plant that lives for more than two years, returning season after season from the same root system. Most perennials die back to the ground in winter and re-emerge in spring. Examples include coneflowers, hostas, and daylilies.
Biennial
A plant that takes two full growing seasons to complete its lifecycle. In the first year it produces roots and foliage; in the second year it flowers, sets seed, and then dies. Foxglove and hollyhock are classic biennials.
Tender Perennial
A perennial plant that is killed by frost and therefore treated as an annual in cold-winter climates. Impatiens and geraniums (pelargoniums) are common examples. In warm, frost-free regions, they may live for many years.
Growing Season

Hardiness Zone
